Friends of the Earth Cymru - Sustainable travel - can Welsh tourism lead the way? - January 2023

In January 2023, Friends of the Earth Cymru asked whether Welsh Tourism can lead the way in sustainable travel. Read the full article here

"Tourism contributes hugely to the Welsh economy but it also contributes to climate emissions. It's time for Wales to position itself as a destination for eco-tourism, and cater to the growing demand for sustainable travel from eco-conscious visitors.

Wales already holds a unique position when it comes to sustainable development. It is the only country to date to enshrine this in legislation under The Well-being of Future Generations Act 2015, which requires public bodies to think about the long term impact of their decisions on future generations.

The Roost in Merthyr Tydfil is a small self-catering cabin site that offers an ‘electric-only’ energy system. One thing we’re certainly not short of in Wales is rain, and this site aims to harness it. Rainwater is collected and stored in big tanks which are used on-site to flush toilets and water the garden. LED lights are triggered via motion sensors to ensure minimal electricity wastage and the Wi-Fi controlled heaters cut out if they are left on."

Please note that Phill did this off his own back and paid to stay, we weren't aware he'd be doing this lush video (thanks Phill).

"The Roost Merthyr Tydfil glamping site opened in October 2019, primarily as a base for hikers, bikers and outdoor lovers. It is fully booked for Easter with guests coming from across the UK, Massachusetts in the USA and Germany.

“Our international visitors have definitely increased,” said co-owner Kath Morgans.  “After an obviously challenging couple of years, which we got through with the support of the Council, it’s fantastic to see so many people choosing to visit Merthyr Tydfil and the Brecon Beacons to take part in the activities available.

“Top of the activity list are definitely BikePark Wales and hiking in the Beacons, so when designing the Roost, we made sure to offer the facilities that hikers and bikers need. We now have lots of returning guests, which is great for us and for Merthyr Tydfil.”"

Afterwards, stay in one of the cute cabins at The Roost Merthyr Tydfil, just one mile from the trails, which includes a bike wash and dry room for all your dirty gear.
